“The urgency and authenticity of William Heyen’s voice are unmistakable and the plain directness with which he presents his sense of the beauty of existence and the menace that overhangs it, and our share in them both. He speaks for the conscience of our time, and for what in our days is worth caring for.” – W. S. Merwin

(2007:  978-0-944048-43-6)

9 pp / illustrated     5.5 x 8.5     $7.50

William Heyen creates the atmosphere of a folktale in this narrative poem about a farmer and the devil he purchases at a country marketplace.  The devil labors for the farmer until the “handsome red-shelled fellow” turns the farmer’s life into a nightmare. This letterpress edition features a linocut of the devil bellowing out his song.
